OLYMPIAN MMXII BATH CITY

This monumental sculpture is carved directly form one single block of Bath stone and is now a permanent feature of the city of Bath. It formed a part of the 2012 Olympic celebrations, capturing a moment in time and honoring the outstanding achievements of one of Baths Finest athletes, the swimmer Mark Foster. A Legacy sculpture for the City of Bath, carved from Bath Stone kindly donated to the project by The Bath Stone Group Ltd.

  • In 2011 I received a commission to carve a twice life size torso of 5 times Olympian, 8 world records and 6 times world swimming champion, Mark Foster: as an invited guest artist for Art at the Edge I ran the project for 1 year as an Open Studio just behind the Royal Crescent. The finished Sculpture is permanently placed in the world heritage City of Bath. The unveiling took place on the 22nd May 2012 to coincide with the Olympic Flame coming to light the way to the London 2012 Games.

Bath City College has become involved with this exciting project with Nigel Bryant and Paul Maggs heading up the stone Masons and conservation department, collaborating to create the huge plinth needed for this sculpture. While I was in the process of carving this immense block, many guests from all over the world visited the open studio to see the work in progress. My thanks to all those who signed my visitor book for all their support. This project has given me so many great moments with the chance to open up my practice like this and to return to the earliest form of stone carving with just a set of hand tools has been a most enlightening experiance .
